Needlefelt Coir Rolls and Rubberised Sheets: Applications Across Horticulture, Packaging, and Construction

Most buyers come to us for a specific product — a mulch mat, an acoustic panel, a packaging insert. What they don’t always realise is that the same two base materials sit behind almost everything we manufacture. Needlefelt coir rolls and rubberised coir sheets are the versatile raw forms of coconut fibre that get cut, moulded, pressed, and shaped into 20+ finished products across four industries. If you’re a product designer, procurement manager, or OEM looking for a natural fibre material you can engineer to your own specs — this is where you start.

Two Formats, Two Properties

Needlefelt coir rolls are made by mechanically interlocking coconut fibres into a continuous sheet using a needle-punching process. No adhesive. No chemical binder. The result is a lightweight, flexible, breathable material that can be cut, layered, and shaped. GSM is fully customisable. Standard roll widths are 1m and 2m, with custom lengths available.

Rubberised coir sheets bond coconut fibre with natural latex rubber under heat and pressure. This creates a denser, more rigid material with higher compression strength and longer durability. Thickness and density are tuneable to application requirements. Available as flat sheets in custom dimensions.

The choice between them depends on what you need: needlefelt for flexibility, breathability, and light weight; rubberised for rigidity, load-bearing, and longevity.

In Horticulture: Grow Pads, Mulch Mats, and Pot Liners

This is where most of our coir roll and sheet volume goes. Rubberised sheets become grow pads for hydroponic systems and nursery propagation beds — cut to fit standard trays, with custom hole patterns for seed placement. Needlefelt rolls become mulch mat discs, basket liners, and window trough liners. Both formats are used as the base material for our coir pots and seedling trays. If you’re a nursery buying finished products from us, needlefelt and rubberised coir are what those products are made from.

In Packaging: Cushioning Wraps and Insert Base Material

Rubberised coir sheets are the starting stock for our coir foam cushioning and foam blocks. We CNC-cut these sheets into custom-moulded inserts that replace EPS and PE foam inside shipping boxes. Needlefelt rolls serve as wrapping material — a natural alternative to plastic bubble wrap for interleaving, wrapping, and void-fill. For OEMs who want to engineer their own packaging from raw coir material rather than buying finished inserts, we supply the sheets in bulk.

In Construction: Insulation and Acoustic Panels

Rubberised coir sheets at higher densities (80–120 kg/m³) become acoustic panels and insulation panels. The same material delivers thermal conductivity of 0.045 W/mK and meaningful sound absorption across mid-to-high frequencies. Architects specifying coir panels for walls and ceilings are effectively specifying rubberised coir sheet cut to size and finished for interior mounting. Needlefelt rolls at lower densities serve as breathable insulation layers in roof assemblies and wall cavities.

In Erosion Control: Blankets and Geotextiles

Needlefelt coir rolls, reinforced with polypropylene netting, become erosion control blankets for slopes, embankments, and construction sites. The coir retains moisture and supports seed germination while the netting provides tensile strength on steep gradients. GSM range: 400–900 g/m² depending on slope severity and expected rainfall. Without the PP netting, the same needlefelt roll serves as woven coir geotextile for drainage, soil separation, and riverbank protection.

How to Specify: What We Need From You

  • Format: Needlefelt roll or rubberised sheet?

  • Dimensions: Width, length (rolls) or sheet size (sheets). Custom cutting available.

  • GSM / density: If you know your target, tell us. If not, tell us the application and we’ll recommend.

  • Volume: One-off sample, pilot run, or container-load production?

  • Application: What’s the end product? This determines whether we optimise for flexibility, compression strength, moisture management, or acoustic performance.

Trade-Offs

  • Not a finished product. Coir rolls and sheets are raw or semi-finished materials. You’ll need to cut, shape, or assemble them into your end product. If you want finished goods, check our product pages for ready-made items.

  • GSM affects everything. Too light and the material won’t hold up. Too heavy and you lose the flexibility or breathability you needed. We help specify this — but it means a conversation, not a catalogue pick.

  • Lead time is 4–6 weeks. Custom GSM, widths, and densities are manufactured to order. Standard specifications may ship faster — ask us about current stock.
